An interview with Jonas Van Cleemput, Software Engineer at Aucxis.

An atypical trajectory

Having an academic education in Biomedical Engineering, Jonas’ trajectory is rather atypical. While studying Biomedical Sciences, he was introduced to programming, which quickly became a passion. “I am very interested in the interface between informatics and science,” he explains. “In a previous work experience, I assisted in developing data systems for capturing information during medication testing. However, last year the temptation to start working at a local, high-tech company like Aucxis finally became too great; the pleasure in developing software is gradually taking over from my interest in science. Aucxis offers me the opportunity to further develop my skills as a software developer.”

Moving on the rhythm of the auction

Jonas is part of the development team of KOSMOS, the Aucxis cloud-based sales and information platform. He has since experienced that developing software does have tough challenges and clarifies this as follows: “It is not always obvious for a software developer to fully grasp business activities explained by an auction employee, often in the local jargon. The challenge is to correctly understand a customer’s requirements and translate them into software that is deployable within that customer’s world.”

He continues: “The time-critical aspect of the auction world – the usually perishable products need to find their way to the consumer as quickly as possible – occasionally causes an unexpected moment of stress. A problem with an application needs to be solved instantly so that as little valuable time as possible is lost. Auction activities never stand still and the team needs to move with their rhythm.”

Super team

The nice atmosphere among colleagues, the challenges in his work and the opportunity to develop software used by customers on a day-to-day basis give Jonas great satisfaction. For his colleagues, he has nothing but praise. “In my eyes, teamwork is the most important value within Aucxis. Being able to enjoy coming to work every day is just super. After all, we spend a lot of time within the walls of the company. A good relationship with colleagues is therefore very important and Aucxis offers all means to strengthen these collegial bonds. As a born and bred inhabitant of the Waasland region, it is also nice to be able to work in the area, among fellow-Waaslanders. Which of course does not mean that the non-Waaslanders are not top colleagues!”
